Supplying High-Performance Pre-Insulated Steel Piping Systems for District Heating Networks in Kazakhstan
Project Overview
Location: Astana/Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan
Client: Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan and Municipal Heating Utilities.
Products Supplied: Pre-insulated Direct-buried Pipes (Steel service pipe + PU foam insulation + HDPE outer casing).
Supply Scope: Over 25,000 meters of main heating arteries, including insulated compensators and fixed supports.
The Challenges
In one of the world’s coldest capitals, heating networks face extreme engineering criteria:
Extreme Thermal Gradients: Winter temperatures drop to -40°C, while the internal fluid reaches 130°C. This massive temperature difference demands superior expansion compensation and bonding strength.
Stringent Heat Loss Management: Long-distance delivery requires a very low thermal conductivity. Any voids or inconsistent density in the insulation layer result in energy waste and poor heating for end-users.
Frozen Soil Dynamics: Seasonal frost heave and settlement in Kazakhstan’s soil apply significant stress to buried pipes, increasing the risk of casing cracks or joint leaks.
Our Detailed Solution
Addressing Central Asia’s harsh climate, we provided a customized solution from material formulation to technical support:
A. Fully Bonded “Pipe-in-Pipe” Technology
We utilized advanced continuous injection foaming to ensure a powerful bond between the steel pipe, PU foam, and HDPE casing. This high shear strength ensures all components move in unison during thermal cycles, preventing delamination.
B. Superior Thermal Insulation Performance
By optimizing the polyurethane formula, our insulation achieved a closed-cell rate exceeding 90%, with a thermal conductivity ($\lambda \leq 0.027$ W/m·K). This minimizes heat loss over long distances even during the harshest winters.
C. Heavy-Duty HDPE Casing
The outer jacket is made from High-Density Polyethylene with specialized anti-UV and anti-embrittlement additives. This ensures durability against soil corrosion and the physical pressures of frozen earth without cracking.
D. Integrated Leak Detection System
We pre-embedded sensing wires within the insulation layer. If the casing breaks or the service pipe leaks, the system pinpoints the location within a 1-meter accuracy by measuring impedance changes, allowing for rapid repairs.
Results & Customer Value
The network has performed reliably through two consecutive heating seasons:
Lower Energy Costs: Field data shows a 22% reduction in heat loss compared to older systems, saving the utility company significant fuel costs.
Resilience Against Extreme Cold: During a week-long -42°C cold snap, the system reported zero failures, maintaining stable indoor temperatures for tens of thousands of residents.
Enhanced Installation Efficiency: Pre-insulated manufacturing meant only joint-work was needed on-site, increasing installation speed by 35% compared to traditional trench methods.
